The environment in Russia is very bad. This is because in the past the Soviet Union trained their army without caring about the environment. There are coal-burning factories that release chemicals into the air, toxic and radioactive waste in rivers and seas, polluted drinking water, pesticides and heavy metals poisoning the soil, and oil spills that were never cleaned up. Russians have been trying to clean their country, but progress is very slow and there is little money to do it with. As a result, people live in disaster zones created by past generation such as the human-made wasteland, the Kuzomenskikh Desert. There is good news though! Students are trying to clean up the environment around them by doing research on detergents that help polluted water and planting trees in their own hometowns.
